Industry Collaborations

NBCC (India) Limited

Two sponsored research projects on bio-cementation with Dr. M. Sudhakara Reddy and Dr. Shweta Goyal of Civil Engineering: development of self-healing concrete using bacteria, Rs. 52.55 lakh, 2018; and development of a field ready bio-product for crack healing and anti-corrosive applications, Rs. 84.16 lakh, 2024. This is a sustained corporate research relationship with a substantial publication record behind it.

BIRAC, the Biotechnology Industry Research Assistance Council

Two translational, industry-facing projects: a fortified biochar microalgae biostimulant nutrimix for precision agronomics with Dr. Bunushree Behera, Rs. 49.51 lakh, 2023; and an artificial colon model for microbiota research with Dr. Priyankar Dey and Dr. Prangya Ranjan Rout, Rs. 45 lakh, 2022. BIRAC funding is a useful signal to industry that the work is close to application.

Spin-offs and incubation

Faculty and former students have taken BIRAC-supported ideas forward through the Institute Innovation Council, VentureLab and STEP. A short case study or two here would carry real weight with prospective collaborators.

University Research collaborations

These are research partnerships, as distinct from the student mobility agreements described under Study Abroad. The distinction is worth making explicit on the page, since the two are easily confused.

Tel Aviv University and Punjab Agricultural University

The trilateral Centre of Excellence in Food Security, chaired by Prof. Nir Ohad of Tel Aviv University. The centre funds departmental research directly, including Dr. Moushumi Ghosh’s work on a data driven approach to food security, Rs. 32 lakh, 2020, and two projects on biosensor platforms for mitigating post-harvest losses, Rs. 25 lakh in 2020 and Rs. 22 lakh in 2021.

Virginia Tech, United States

The Thapar and Virginia Tech Centre of Excellence for Emerging Materials, and its Bio-X initiative, which has seed funded departmental projects with Dr. Dinesh Goyal on graphene oxide coating of titanium implants, Dr. Manoj Baranwal on magnetic nanoparticles for thermochemotherapy, and Dr. Priyankar Dey on chitosan and EGCG nanoconjugates in the gut.

Kazan Federal University, Russia

A bilateral project with the Institute of Fundamental Medicine and Biology on immunogenic peptides for orthohantavirus diagnosis, funded jointly by the Department of Science and Technology and the Russian Science Foundation, Rs. 87.29 lakh, 2023 to 2026, led by Dr. Manoj Baranwal.

University of Hail, Saudi Arabia

A funded project with Dr. Priyankar Dey on the effect of short-chain fatty acid producing commensals isolated from healthy donors on mucosal health, Rs. 10 lakh, 2022.

Bilateral funding channels

The department also works through CEFIPRA for Indo-French collaboration and IUSSTF for Indo-United States collaboration. If there are live projects under either, they would strengthen this section considerably.

Student mobility partnerships, which are separate from the above, are with the University of Queensland, George Mason University and Tel Aviv University. Tel Aviv appears in both lists because the research centre and the 3+2 pathway are distinct arrangements with the same university.
